Jewels of Ladakh: 6 Days Through Leh, Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake
Monasteries, two high mountain passes, the white sand dunes of Nubra and a full day at Pangong Lake, all in under a week.
This is a 5-night, 6-day Ladakh trip covering Leh and Nubra Valley, with full-day excursions to Spituk Monastery and Pangong Lake and a crossing of Khardungla Pass, one of the highest motorable passes in the world. You also get double-humped camels, white sand dunes, and the Diskit and Samstanling monasteries. It's a compact itinerary with a fast gain in altitude, so read the altitude note below before booking. Raahi Cabz can help plan it, and the route can be adjusted. See the full day-by-day itinerary below.
Ladakh doesn't feel like the rest of India, and it doesn't really feel like anywhere else either. The roads climb higher than seems reasonable, monasteries sit in valleys that take hours to reach, and Pangong Lake is said to change colour several times a day. This itinerary packs a lot of that into six days.
Leh is the base. From there you go out to Spituk Monastery, then to Pangong Lake over Changla Pass, then across Khardungla Pass into Nubra Valley, with a day of monasteries and palaces before departure.
It's a compact trip by Ladakh standards. That means less downtime, and less room to adjust if the altitude doesn't agree with you early on. Worth knowing before you go.
A Quick Word on Altitude
Leh sits at around 11,500 ft, and Pangong Lake and Changla Pass are higher still. Altitude sickness is a real possibility for anyone gaining height this quickly, regardless of fitness. Take it easy on arrival day, drink more water than feels necessary, avoid alcohol for the first day or two, and pay attention to headaches, nausea or breathlessness instead of pushing through them. If symptoms show up, stop climbing, and if they don't ease, get to a lower altitude and see a doctor. Anyone with a heart or lung condition should talk to a doctor before booking.
The itinerary as listed has no separate rest day, so if you're not used to altitude, ask for an extra night in Leh at the start. Road and permit conditions for Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake can also change, so confirm the current rules before you travel.

What Makes Ladakh Feel So Different
Most of India is warm, green and crowded. Ladakh is high-altitude desert: bare mountains, thin air, and monasteries perched where they look almost impossible to reach by road.
Nubra Valley adds its own odd contrast, with white sand dunes and double-humped camels in the middle of the Himalayas, a reminder of the old Silk Route trade through the valley. And Pangong Lake is the kind of place photographs don't quite capture, because the colour keeps changing with the light.
Day by Day
Delhi to Leh
Arrival in Leh. At around 11,500 ft, this is worth treating as a rest day rather than rushing into sightseeing: settle in, drink plenty of water and take it slow, even if you feel fine.
Leh, Spituk Monastery and Pather Sahib
A full-day excursion from Leh to Spituk Monastery, one of the important monasteries of central Ladakh, then Pather Sahib, before returning to Leh. Keep the pace gentle. You're still adjusting to the altitude, even on a lighter sightseeing day.
Pangong Lake
A full-day excursion to Pangong Lake, crossing Changla Pass on the way. It's often described as one of the most striking lakes in Asia and is said to change colour several times a day. Bring warm layers whatever the season, because it gets cold quickly once the sun drops.
Khardungla Pass and Nubra Valley
The route to Nubra Valley crosses Khardungla Pass, one of the highest motorable passes in the world. In Nubra the itinerary includes double-humped camels, the white sand dunes and Diskit Monastery.
Monasteries and Palaces
A day for monasteries and palaces, including Samstanling Monastery in Keygar village. After Pangong and Nubra, it brings the trip back to Ladakh's cultural and architectural side.
Leh, departure
Departure from Leh. In under a week the itinerary covers monasteries, two high passes, a desert valley and Pangong Lake.
When to Go
June to September
The high passes and the roads to Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake are usually open, and days are warmest. Nights are still cold, so pack warm layers.
October to May
Much colder, and the high passes can close with snow. If this is your only window, ask whether the route is open.
Who This Trip Suits
It suits travellers who want Ladakh's main highlights without committing to a longer trip, and who are comfortable with altitude and long drives on mountain roads. It's a poorer fit if you have a heart or lung condition, or if you'd rather build in more rest days than this compressed schedule allows. In that case, ask about a longer version instead of forcing this one.
