South India Temples Tour: 13 Nights, 14 Days Through Tamil Nadu
From Chennai's temples to Madurai's Meenakshi Amman and Rameshwaram, with two UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a stop in Pondicherry along the way.
This is a 13-night, 14-day temple tour through Tamil Nadu, starting and ending in Chennai. It covers Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Thanjavur, Trichy, Madurai and Rameshwaram, with stops at Kanchipuram and Chidambaram on the way. The highlights are the Shore Temple and the Brihadeeswarar Temple, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, and the Rameshwaram temple. Raahi Cabz can plan it as a private-cab trip, and the route can be adjusted. See the full day-by-day itinerary below.
South India is home to some of the country's most striking ancient temples, and this itinerary links the best known of them in one loop out of Chennai and back. Over 14 days you move down the Tamil Nadu coast and inland through the old temple towns, ending at Rameshwaram, before returning to Chennai for departure.
It isn't a rushed checklist. Most stops get a day of their own, and the temples are spread across towns that each have their own character, so the trip changes as you go instead of repeating itself.
We can plan this as a private cab journey, which suits a temple route well. Temples run to their own timings, and a car that waits for you is easier than a group schedule that has to keep moving.
Why This Route Works
Each stretch adds something different. Mahabalipuram has the Pallava-era Shore Temple by the sea. Thanjavur is home to the Chola-era Brihadeeswarar Temple. Madurai's Meenakshi Amman Temple is the best-known temple in the city, and Rameshwaram sits at the far end of the route.
Pondicherry sits in the middle as a break from temples, with Raj Nivas and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, so the trip has some variety instead of running as one long temple visit.

Day by Day
Arrive in Chennai
However you arrive, this day is for settling in before the temple circuit begins.
Chennai
The Sri Parthasarathy Temple and the Kapaleeswarar Temple are the two stops in the city, a good introduction to Tamil temple architecture before the road trip starts.
Chennai to Kanchipuram to Mahabalipuram
Darshan at the Sri Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Temple in Kanchipuram, then on to the coast at Mahabalipuram.
Mahabalipuram
The Shore Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the main attraction here, standing right beside the sea.
Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry
A travel day south along the coast to Pondicherry.
Pondicherry
Guided tours of Raj Nivas and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This is the one stop on the route that isn't mainly about Hindu temples, which makes it a change of pace in the middle of the trip.
Pondicherry to Thanjavur
Darshan at the Chidambaram temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, on the way, before arriving in Thanjavur, home to the Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Thanjavur to Trichy
A travel day to Trichy, which sets up tomorrow's sightseeing.
Trichy
The Rock Fort Temple Complex, an important landmark in Trichy, is the focus of the day.
Trichy to Madurai
A travel day to Madurai, the city known for the Meenakshi Amman Temple.
Madurai
Darshan at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, the best-known temple in Madurai.
Madurai to Rameshwaram and back
A full day out and back to Rameshwaram and its temple, then back to Madurai for the night.
Madurai to Chennai
Back to Chennai for departure. It's a long way from Madurai, so the itinerary keeps the departure itself for Day 14.
Departure from Chennai
Your trip ends with departure from Chennai.
Before You Visit the Temples
Dress modestly for temple visits, with shoulders and knees covered, and wear footwear that is easy to slip on and off, since shoes are left outside.
Many temples close in the early afternoon and reopen in the evening, and a few restrict entry to the inner shrine or limit phones and cameras. It's worth asking your driver or guide about the rules at each temple before you go in.
When to Go
December to February
Cooler and drier than the rest of the year, which helps on a trip with a lot of walking at temple complexes. The northeast monsoon brings rain mostly between October and December, so check the forecast if you travel then.
April to June
Hot and humid across Tamil Nadu, which makes midday temple visits hard going.
